MMB Congregation, Welcome

About Congregation of The Malabar Missionary Brothers

Let me introduce ourselves.  Ours is an indigenous Franciscan Congregation founded in the year 1948 by Msgr. Zacharias Vazhappilly at Thrissur, Kerala.   Our Congregation is exclusively for religious Brothers.  The objective of the foundation was to form a Congregation of Brothers to work for evangelization.   Our charism is ever adaptable apostolic availability responding to the needs and signs of the times.

Following the footsteps of St. Francis of Assisi, our Congregation laid stress on charitable activities without expecting any remuneration.  We are actively involved in catechetical work and co-operating in pastoral ministry in the parishes.  Our Brothers help the needy in various neglected areas of life.  Caring destitute homeless aged people is one of our services.  We have six such centres at present.   We are also engaged in giving training and education to mentally challenged children and youth.  We have five such training centres in different parts of the country.  Some children are physically and mentally handicapped.  Our trained Brothers are taking special care for such children.

We recently started a new ministry.  That is giving training and rehabilitation facilities for stray jobless youth including those who come out of government juvenile homes.  These youngsters with delinquencies require cautious care, homely love and prudent guidance.  Our Brothers take care of them, giving training and job opportunities.

2023 was the Platinum Jubilee (75 years) year of the foundation of the MMB Congregation.  For better co-ordination and administration, the Congregation was bifurcated into 2 Provinces namely St. Thomas Province in Thrissur, Kerala and Assisi Province in Bhopal, M.P.  Now our activities are spread out to 16 dioceses.  We have houses and apostolic activities in eight dioceses in South India: Trichur, Palakkad, Irinjalakuda, Mananthavady, Thalassery, Ernakulam, Ramanathapuram and Kurnool; and eight missionary dioceses, Bhopal,  Sagar, Jhansi, Gorakhpur, Bareilly, Jagdalpur, Daltenganj and Hazaribagh in North India.

Presently we have eight novices, Five Postulants, Sevan Aspirants and Ten candidates in the various formation houses and Three junior Brothers as temporary professed members.
